Sikkim is divided into NSEW. Gangtok is in east sikkim.
West sikkim (Pelling, Yuksom) is closer to the Kanchenzongha. The approach is from siliguri (you do not have to go to gangtok first to travel to these places).
The north has great valleys and treks. These trips start from gangtok.
About staying, let me know the kind of accommodation you are looking for and I can suggest.

Looks like my reply did not get posted ! It is in Darjeeling.
There is the quaintly named Misty Tree Mountain Hotel bang in the centre of Gangtok. From their terrace you can see the entire range of the ice capped peaks on a clear day.
Both the hotels are very reasonably priced. Food at the Travellers' Inn (could be Lodge)is O.K. but non existant at Misty Tree.
Visited Darjeeling last April and Gangtok in September 2004.
